Bowser’s story with cancer

In early May 2017, I woke up to my 7 year old dachshund having a seizure (at the time I didn’t know this was a seizure but later found out that it was) and rushed him to the emergency vet where many blood tests were performed. They found that his blood sugar was low but they said it wasn’t low enough to have caused the seizure. This is the beginning of how everything started. I went for 6 months of not knowing why he was collapsing, why he was having seizures, why he was having convulsions, focal seizures, etc. (Multiple vets could not figure out the root cause to this)and finally the vet finally decided to do an insulin glucose ratio test. It was determined that it looked like we were dealing with an insulinoma. I chose to go with medical management for many reasons but the biggest reason being they said the chances that he would survive the surgery would be very slim and the chances of it coming back were very likely. So he was put on prednisolone which at first made a huge difference but over time stopped working to its effectiveness. He was then put on Diazoxide that is very hard to get. On May 21, 2019 Bowser lost his battle with this horrible cancer. I miss him everyday. He was a great dog and I just wish more were educated on this rare cancer as the diagnosis was hard due to this being rare. I wanted to share his story and bring awareness to this as he deserves to be remembered.
