Bonnie in the Bluebonnets
Cynthia Lockwood
Throughout Bonnie’s lifetime I’ve taken photos of her in fields of bluebonnets, the beautiful State Flower of Texas, where I live. They bloom every spring and I found a beautiful field in the photo of Bonnie I’m submitting for the contest. In this photo she was 11 years old. She is now 14-1/2. She’s a two-time mast cell tumor cancer survivor. In 2020 she had to have surgery to remove a malignant mast cell tumor. At first the doctor said her leg might have to be removed. Thankfully, he was able to successfully remove the tumor with clear margins and preserve her leg. In 2022 she had to have the same surgery for another malignant mast cell tumor in a different location. Both surgeries were successful and my husband and I are beyond thankful for that!! She’s a fighter and has done really well after her surgeries! She and I have a lot in common. Just four months after I took this photo in April of 2022, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I went through very difficult treatments, then a stem cell transplant and am now in remission!! She was such a comfort to me during the past three years when I was going through such a grueling cancer battle. I’m so very thankful that she has lived to be this age with good quality of life and has survived cancer too!!
