Brandi is the typical crazy chihuahua who loves “her people” hard and will stop at nothing to protect them. Brandi is always full of energy and happy— whether she’s playing with her millions of toys, chewing her bones, sunbathing or being a velcro pup. Out of no where one morning, she seemed to be low energy and not touching her breakfast— which isn’t too alarming, as she can be a picky eater sometimes. A day or two later, I discovered a lump on her elbow and immediately called her vet. Since it was not going away with medication, they wanted to remove it and send it for a biopsy. Brandi received her cancer diagnosis 6 days before Christmas of 2023. A month later, we were informed by the pet oncologist that it’s grade II soft tissue sarcoma and due to the location of the lump, she has incomplete margins and that it is anticipated to return within a year. The picture above is seven months post-op, on her 11th birthday— that was extra sweet. And today, we’re two weeks away from her one year anniversary of her lump removal surgery. Today she is just as crazy and happy as she was before her cancer diagnosis. She now visits her vet more often to check for any regrowths/new growths. And I now check frequently for any lumps on her and the rest of the pack. She’s a fighter. My husband and I got Bailey when we had only been dating for 3 months. She made us a family and changed our lives forever. She went through so much but no matter how scared she was or how bad she felt she worried about me. She was always there with the biggest smile and sloppy kiss. She understood me better than I do myself. When Bails was 6 she had an FCE and was paralyzed in her back legs and tail. After months of physical therapy she was able to walk on her own again. Then at 9 she had to have her spleen and andrenal gland removed due to suspected cancer- but once again our fighter won- it wasn’t cancer. We did rechecks every few months for years. Our family didn’t travel much because I hated leaving her and our son is autistic and struggled with strange environments. In 2021 we purchased a camper and my dream of taking Bailey traveling came true. Over the next 3 years she went as far north to Michigan, south to Florida, she camped in 12 states, she saw mountains, the ocean, and had so many wonderful adventures. Towards the end she got slower and had a hard time walking but we bought her a wagon (her “swagger wagon”) and she could not have been happier going everywhere with her family. Sadly in May of 2023 while camping for Mother’s Day, Bailey got a bloody nose. After tests and weeks of worry our nightmare came true- she was diagnosed with nasal cancer. We tried a low dose of chemo but with her age there wasn’t a lot we could do. We were able to keep her comfortable and she was a trooper living her best life down to the end. She passed one month before her 14th birthday. Birthdays were her favorite thing, if it was anyone’s birthday it was Baileys birthday. If she heard someone singing she knew it meant cake. So before we said goodbye, made her one last cake, sang happy birthday, snuggled and she perked up just enough to eat her favorite. She overcame so much in life and fought so hard to never leave my side. Losing her was one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through and it still hurts every single day. But I have so many photos, videos and memories to keep her alive in me. This picture is from her last summer on the beach in Hilton Head. She was so incredibly happy! Knowing that he was a pitbull/mastiff mix, we were always extremely careful with him around people and other dogs. We worked with him constantly until he was able to go camping and quad riding with us. He developed cancer at around age seven, but it was operable and the surgery was successful. We were told that it could reoccur later in his pancreas. As he got older, we made a bucket list for him, which included traveling to Venice Beach, California, and back to my deceased parents farm in Ohio. He made both of these journeys. On the trip to the farm, I could tell that his health was failing, but he was a trouper, being strong and completing the trip as if he was not in pain. A week after we returned to Arizona, I made an appointment with the veterinarian. The night before the appointment, we took our last swim together, and although he could only complete one lap with my help, he gladly did so. Hours before his trip to the vet, he collapsed, and had to be rushed to an emergency clinic. They removed his spleen, gave him blood and plasma transfusions, but in the end cancer took his life. His journey has been challenging and profoundly illuminating, deeply impacting our shared experiences. It all began when he was around two years old and he underwent his first surgery. Fortunately, all of his tumors were caught early and successfully treated through surgery alone. This experience underscored the importance of routine at-home checks, which involve simply feeling their bodies from head to toe and everywhere in between and taking swift action whenever anything suspicious is discovered. Early detection is crucial—it allows us to address issues before they escalate and require more aggressive treatments. My experience with canine cancer began with the heartbreaking loss of my Boxer, Gideon, who succumbed to lymphoma at just eight years old. Losing him was devastating, and it deepened my commitment to ensuring Zeke receives the best care possible. I have connected with others facing similar challenges by sharing our story within my Instagram community. These therapeutic interactions have served as important reminders to prioritize early cancer detection in dogs. The support and understanding I've received from this community have been invaluable, reinforcing the importance of our shared mission. I dedicate my advocacy efforts to honoring both Gideon and Zeke. By raising awareness and supporting fellow members of the canine cancer community, I hope to make a difference in the lives of dogs and their owners. Sincerely, Patty Ramirez, Zeke's mom.
